"What you see is what you get, i.e. there was no cutting of the vehicle prior to the pictures being taken.
It is my brother-in-law that you see holding the mobile phone, he honestly doesn't know the speed that he was going at but wasn't near as fast as he has done in the past on that particular part of the road.
Although the road was completely dry he said that it felt he was on ice and the car just careened into the tree. He actually called the emergency services and climbed out of the car by himself, he spent only a couple of hours in hospital, apart from a few minor scratches he got a bandage around his little finger, I told him if he's not already religious he should take it up ASAP!
The car WAS a pristine RS6 ABT, I was supposed to pick it up that very day to borrow it from him for a week as I've always wanted to try out the ABT version. He really should have simply told me that he didn't want me to drive his car I'm so happy he is alive and all in one piece. "
WOW....

it was the summer of 2004 and I was working at an independant auto shop in the middle of nowhere. it was a sunny day, about 3:00, and the boss/owner left to test drive a vehicle with a customer. he wasnt gone 10 minutes when the truck came into the parking lot looking somthing like a NASCAR pitstop. he slid into the lot and screeched to a halt at the first bay door with the passenger window rolled down, and screamed out "Grab fire extinguishers and get in the back! HURRY!
we did as told, being the techs working the first 2 bays, and took off down the road. we drove about 4 miles and as we came over a hill I saw something that chills me to remember even now.
at the base of 2 hill was a small single lane bridge that I'd driven over countless times before as it was part of our test drive route. there was a fog rolling over the road amid piles of debris and burning switchgrass on both sides of the road. as we reached the bottom of the hill we jumped out and began putting out grass fires on either side of the road while trying not to burn ourselves on the debris lying in the grass. The ambulance was just unloading as we pulled up.
In the middle of this rolling fog was a pile of wadded up scrap metal, and just about every part you can think of was lying by itself scattered across the bridge. the truck had been a mid-80's Ford Ranger, and I was able to identify it by the back half of the truck in almost pristine condition roughly 75ft away from the bridge. it was torn off clean just in front of the bed. The brushfires had started when pieces of the exhaust manifold had flown away from the engine which was sitting peacefully on it's oil pan in the middle of the street looking like it had just been pulled from a crate. the transmission had seperated from it and landed about 25ft away from the engine.
In the middle of all this carnage was a wadded-up ball of sheetmetal that had once been a cab, and squeezed inside it was the driver of the former Ranger. it was balled up so tightly that no parts of him were visible, and looking at the sheriffs pictures weeks later it was impossible for me to imagine how he had not been crushed inside the wreckage. But there he was, talking and crying as the EMT tried to figure out how to remove him from the mess.
After talking to the sheriff some weeks later, I was told the man had lived and was awaiting trial on child molestation charges, and that he had been trying to kill himself by driving his truck into the side of the bridge at high speed. The man had only minor injuries and was released to police custody only a few days after the wreck.
I cant imagine how he survived and I wish I had a copy of the pictures the sheriff had, but it was the most incredible thing I think I've ever seen.
kinda makes you wonder.
later,
Jack

And now that you mention it, a car that dissolves into freaking shrapnel like this one seems like JUST the sort of car to do that... :)

It would amuse me if the blinkers and brake lights still worked, because most of the wires still seem to be connected. Heck, I think they're holding the rest of the car together.
